They Live

The 1988 American science fiction action film is written and directed by John Carpenter and is based on the 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” by Ray Nelson. The film follows a drifter who discovers an odd pair of sunglasses.

The glasses allow the wearer to see the concealed aliens living amongst us. And not just that, it uncovers how extraterrestrial life is manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via mass media. At the time of release, the film was not well-received, with critics calling the writing and social commentary shallow. It was only later, did it gain a cult following.
