Juliane’s pain was almost unbearable at this point. She squeezed some gasoline out of the can and tried to clean her wounds. Utterly exhausted, she passed out in front of the hut, completely oblivious to the fact that the hut was inhabited.

The following morning, she was discovered inside the hut by a group of local boatmen, bloody, covered head to toe in maggots and stinking of gasoline. When the men saw her, they were frightened, believing her to be a water spirit from their folk tales.
