Survivor’s Guilt

When Juliane came to, she was extremely weak, but she just about managed to successfully communicate to the boatmen in the little Spanish she knew. The men did their best to treat her wounds and then, after a seven hour boat ride, they reached the hospital, where Juliane was reunited with her father.

Not long afterwards, Maria Koepcke’s body was discovered by a rescue party. It turned out that Juliane’s mother had, in fact, survived the plane crash, but just for a few days. To this day, Juliane is plagued  by thoughts of what her mother’s final days must have been like. The Amazon is not a safe place at the best of times.
