Not Enough Evidence
It was to the dismay of many that they later on realize that they were being led on with more and more false stories of what happened that night. And unfortunately, the law only is attracted to evidence and unfortunately evidence can barely be found against the trio.

On July 4, 2005, the trio appeared before a judge and due to lack of evidence, the Kalpoe brothers were the first to be dismissed. Van der Sloot on the other hand, spent about 60 more days in jail before being let go. And while they were all rearrested after a few weeks, they were also released yet again for lack of evidence.
